congresswoman debbie halvorson, a supporter of gun rights who touts her "a" rating with the national rifle association. or who did tout that rating with the national rifle association before this year. because this is both the first election for federal office since we picked a president, and also the first federal election since newtown, since the elementary massacre at sandy hook elementary in december. even though she has touted her "a" rating from the nra in the past, now debbie halvorson is now touting her support for universal background checks for gun purchases. this time around she insists she has not lobbied the nra for an endorsement. ooh, debbie halvorson pals with the nra? you have the wrong number. that "a" rating from the nra must have been a political asset in the past, but now must seem more than it's worth. in january bloomberg started running ads against debbie halvorson and another candidate in the race who also had an "a" rating from the nra. the ads have been inescapable in chicago and on tv. and even if you don't watch tv, a, you should. tv is way better now. bu

debbie halvorson, a democrat, promising a crowd at a gun rights rally she will be their voice wherever she goes. that same debbie halvorson is trying to win the first congressional election taking place in america after the sandy hook shooting. maybe once upon a time that kind of position on guns, maybe once upon a time having an a-plus rating from the national rifle association would be a great asset for getting elected to congress. i'm sure at some point it might have been, but it is not anymore. a couple of weeks ago, we showed the ad that the superpac run by mayor mike bloomberg had started running in that illinois district. highlighting debbie halvorson's a rating from the nra and highlighting it is not a good way. despite protests from debbie halvorson, the pac is running a second ad essential hi making the same argument, but essentially just adding an exclamation point. >> gun violence, it's ought of control. debbie halvorson will make it worse. halvorson oppose as ban on deadly assault weapons. he is co-sponsored a bill to allow some criminals to carry guns across state lines.

look to be a three-way race between debbie halvorson, former state lawmaker robin kelly, and chicago alderman anthony beale. there are 14 democrats running, but it looked to be coming down to these three. as a former member of congress herself, debbie halvorson at the outset appeared to be the odds on favorite, but that was before this happened. a slew of advertising from new york city mayor michael bloomberg's pac all on the issue of guns. these ads have absolutely blanketed the district. they are the only tv ads running in the race. and the ads go after debbie halvorson for having an "a" rating from the nra. that may have been an asset in previous elections, but no longer. this is the first federal election since the newtown school shooting. chicago is a city that has had real problems with gun violence. and the confluence of those factors have made this kind of an interesting test case. what maybe should have been a cakewalk for debbie halvorson, who had the highest name recognition in the case ended up turning into a dogfight, at least heading into today's voting from wha

compared with 24% for her nearest challenger, former congresswoman debbie halvorson. again, because the second district is such a deep, deep blue district, whoever wins the democratic primary is pretty much expected to win the general in a couple of weeks and to become the nation's newest member of congress. former congresswoman debbie halvorson started the race as the odds on favorite, but this was the first federal election since not just the presidential race, but also the newtown school shootings. and debbie halvorson's "a" rating from the nra made her the target of a nonstop series of tv ads, in fact, the only ads that aired in this race. and then today it was robin kelly who celebrated her win after acknowledging how much this was a vote on the issue of guns and the issue of the nra as much as it was a vet on particular candidates. >> today you did more than cast a vote. you did more than choose a democratic candidate for congress. you did more than i ever could have imagined. you sent a message that was heard around our state and across the nation. a message that tells the nra th
